Fighting Plaque
Plaque can cause two dental
diseases, periodontal disease and it can also cause
cavities.
By controlling plaque through good
regular oral hygiene you can minimize dental decay and gum disease. Many people belief that plaque is
deposits of food on the teeth. Plaque is not food or food residue, it is in fact a clear, sticky
deposit of bacteria that sticks to the surface of teeth and gum tissue. So strong is the plaques
adhesion to the teeth, it has to be removed by tooth brush and
floss.
Plaque starts to collect on the
teeth as little as 4 hours after you last brushed your teeth. So brushing your teeth twice a day is very
important to prevent the build up of plaque on your teeth. Additionally you need to floss your teeth once
daily.
One of the main areas where plaque tends
to be a problem is at the base of the teeth, where the tooth meets the gum (and is called the gingival
margin).
